We can help you look after your tyres
If you look after your tyres, they'll return the favour. The most important thing to remember is to maintain correct tyre pressure to ensure good performance and you safety.
Why is maintaining the right tyre pressure important?
Under-inflated tyres
Over-inflated tyres
Both over and under-inflated tyres
-
Suffer more damage than those with the correct pressure and need to be replaced more regularly.
-
Correct tyre pressures help to maintain optimum fuel efficiency. This can have a direct impact on our environment in terms of CO2 emissions.
National Tyres can help provide information on the recommended tyre pressure for your vehicle.
How to look after your tyres
Most importantly, make sure you have the right tyre for your vehicle. The speed and load ratings for your tyres should be the same as the original fitment items – never fit a tyre of a lesser specification.
Things to remember:
-
Don’t just look at the tyre - appearances can be deceiving. Use an accurate tyre pressure gauge.
-
Check your spare as you may need it one day. Ensure that the spare is serviceable and roadworthy.
-
Tyre pressures should be checked roughly every 2-4 weeks. It is normal for tyres to slowly lose air over time.
-
Tyre pressures should be checked and set when the tyres are cold (not after a long road trip) because heat will temporarily raise the pressure.
-
The correct tyre pressure for your vehicle should be listed in the vehicle handbook that is usually kept in the glove box.
-
Make sure valve caps are fitted because they keep loose matter out of the valve core
-
Too much or too little pressure can be dangerous.
-
Tyre failure at high speeds can have tragic consequences. If you notice damage to the tyre, get it inspected by a tyre specialist
-
Push-in plugs from the outside should only be used for temporary emergency repairs. Proper tyre repairs should be carried out by a tyre specialist who will remove the tyre from the rim and inspect it for internal damage before repairing it from the inside.
-
Tread pattern – Although the minimum tread pattern depth is 1mm or 2/32 of an inch, we recommend that you replace your tyres before they become that worn.
-
Inspect with your own eyes – Some problems you can be seen by yourself such as cracks, splits, bulges, foreign objects like nails and stones embedded in the tread .If you spot something potentially nasty, get it looked at by a specialist tyre consultant.
